The final "Global Fund " raising efforts resulted in raising as follows:

England/Australia $9,524.00 (41 families)

Canada /Denmark $24,200.00 (111 families)

USA/Australia $17,898.00 (68 families)

Total $51,622.00 (*)

(*) Please note that the amount includes $1,300.00 that was already been remitted to the Renovation Committee in Zanzibar. Also, the funds collected are subject to exchange rate fluctuations.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the fund raising efforts. And this fund raising would not have been possible without the support of the three committee members(England/Canada / USA) and the Zando Committee(Canada). May God bless you all for your kindness and generosity.

These funds are maintained in three different banks in England, Canada and the USA. Once we hear from the Restoration Committee in Zanzibar (RCZ), we will remit these funds to the Committee who is responsible for the restoration. We will continue to accept donations as long as we are holding the funds. Any future fund raising efforts will be left to the individual committees.

Phase I and II of the restoration are almost done and the RCZ is planning to implement Phase III. Our funds that were raised will be used for the restoration of the inside of the Church (Phase III). Since the funds needed for Phase III are in the range of $100,000 to $200,000, the committee is seeking the services of Joseph Noronha (ex-SJCS architect) to help them decide how to implement the work needed.

St. Joseph's Fund Raising

We have come to the end of the Global fund raising. So, please provide me with the final amount and families who donated/pledged(Claude and Astrid). Please make sure that their names are on the blog that Benito has been updating for us. I would like the information by September 12,2011 as I will be returning from a business work in Florida. I would like to do the FINAL UPDATE on the SJCS blog.

I would appreciate any ideas you have as to where we go from here with the fund raising. We will have raised/pledged around $51,000.00. The committee in Zanzibar is planning the Phase III of the project. Do the committees in UK and Canada want to continue with the fund raising? I know that it is not possible here in the USA as we are spread out and cannot have any fund raising activities like you can do in Canada and UK.

Once the funds are sent, what kind of updates should the Renovation Committee in Zanzibar provide us so that we can inform those who have contributed to the fund. I think we have a responsibility to explain to them how the funds are use for the Phase III.

How about a reunion in Toronto with the goal of having a dinner/dance like we did in 2005? All proceeds will go to the Restoration of the church????

Any ideas or suggestion will be appreciated.

I received the following email from Alice Salim who is the treasurer of the Restoration Committee in Zanzibar. As you will note that the Phase I and Phase II is almost done and now they are starting to work on Phase III (the inside of the Church). This is where our funds will be used ($51,085.00).
The Committee is soliciting the help of Joseph Norohona, a well known architecture in Dar-es-Salaam. He is a graduate of our St. Joseph Convent School in Zanzibar and studied in Bombay, India. His children all live in the USA. He has two sisters living in Toronto, Canada. I know him well and I am sure he will do his best to advice the committee in restoring the inside of the church which requires a lot of work.
So please help us with a donation to retore the beautiful church of our youth or future generatons. And God will bless you. Our global fund raising will end on Agust 31, 2011.

These funds are kept in three separate accounts in England, Canada and USA. Once we hear from the Restoration Committee, we will remit these funds to the Restoration Committee who are responsible for the restoration under the leadership of Bishop Shao.

The global fund raising for St. Joseph Cathedral Church in Zanzibar will end on August 31, 2011. So we are making a special final appeal to help us in this great cause. If you have already given, please consider a second donation. If you have not given, please consider a donation.

The first phase of the three phase project is done (front of church and steeples). The second phase of fixing the outside part of the church is in process. The third phase is doing the inside of the church which represents the greatest expense. And with the falling of the ceiling, the cost keeps going up. The cost for the 3rd phase is estimated to be over $100,000. Let us all help to renovate this beautiful church.

Bishop Shao and the Restoration Committee in Zanzibar are working hard to raise funds and we can all help in this worthy cause. The church congregation on the island have limited resources and are looking for help from us. Please help us by making a contribution.

The people of France gifted us this beautiful church. It was the place where our faith grew. Many of us were baptized, confirmed, married and celebrated the lives of our deceased loved ones. It was the place we celebrated our feast days and the centre of so many social and cultural activities where we met, made many friends and fell in love. Let us help renovate this church and gift it to the next generation.

Letter from Bishop Shao, Bishop of Zanzibar Tanzania
I received this email from Rev. Fr.Alwyn C.S.Sp. As you may or may not know. Fr. Alwyn is a graduate of SJCS and joined the Holy Ghost Order; the same order who who were in charge of the church in the island for many years.

He is in charge of a parish in Belmont, California, and regularly vists Zanzibar as he has a brother,Lenny Furtado, who still lives in Zanzibar. He keeps in close contact with the Bishop and is a close friend of his.

Fr. Al gives talk to high school children and others in trying to raise funds for the Lieberman High School in Zanzibar that is under the supervision of the Bishop. He is also in close contact with all the zanzibaris around the San Francisco area. Visit him and he will give a great time.

Please read the letter from Bishop Shao that was sent to Fr. Alwyn and consider making a donation to help restore Our Church.

The Renovation Committee in Zanzibar is in charge of the restoration of the church and need all our help.Let us help them as much as we can and leave the rest to God.

First and foremost, I want to convey my sincere sympathy for the demise of our dear elder sister who passed away a week ago. I just met Margy today after the first mass and passed this sad information to me. Rest assured Al she is in our prayers. May her soul rest in peace -Amen.

Al. I'm just back from Nairobi where we had our regional episcopal conference that lasted two weeks. There was no way I could read my mail due to the poor services we had at our hostel. I'm happy to be at home and handle my mail.

Yes, we had a big fall of our ceiling that is made up of gypsum powder, a big potion fall on the sanctuary, luckily there was no damage of life due to that it was night time. The extend of the damage is big because it will ever continue to the whole ceiling. When we checked as why such a damage, we found that most of the wood used to hold the gypsum is rotten. This applied to the whole, because last three years we had another fall about three meters just in front of the altar. we were lucky to find a person who offered to replace the portion. The situation is indeed serious, if we really want to stop the damage we have to re-do the whole ceiling and not only patches. However, as we struggle to replace the whole, we should as well do it in phases. The first phase therefore will be the sanctuary and then gradually continue with the other sections as funds are available.

We have not been able to get the estmates of the damage, but we hope to bring a specialist to give us the estimates. Rest assured by nest week will be ready to say how much is the damage.

Meanwhile, would you continue to thank Anthony and all the group members for their efforts and support.

Will be out of my office as from Tuesday to Friday, but will ask the priest in-charge to bring experts to evaluate the extend of the damage.

Since my last posting, we have received donations from an anonymous ex-zanzibaris in Australia (2nd donation),Washington , D.C, England, Kenya, Vivian de Souza (Michigan) and the Dourado family in Pittsburgh (Bellarmine, Angela and in memory of Teacher Roffin).

We thank them for their kindness and generosity.

As a result, we have met the challenge of the ex-zanzibari from the East coast of the USA who informed us that if we reached $49,500, he would donate $500.00.

An ex-Zanzibari in the USA has made an additional $500.00 donation to the fund and this brings us to a total of $48,000.00.

The person would like to remain anonymous. We are very thankful for the kindness and generosity.

Yesterday, I received a challenge grant for $500.00 from another ex-Zanzibari from the east coast of the USA. If we raise $1,500.00 by August 31, 2011, this anonymous donor will donate the last $500,00 to the fund. This is what we are about. We plant seeds and one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects beyond our capabilities.

We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for God's grace to enter and do the rest.

The "Global" fund raising project began on September 1, 2010 and will close on August 31, 2011. Our goal is to reach $50,000.00. We are short of only $2,649.00.

Hello Benny: FYI

I just came back from Zanzibar and during my short stay had the opportunity of visiting our Church. I did an extensive tour of the entire church and here are the latest photos and some of my findings.

Phase 1 which is renovations for the statue at the main entrance of St. Joseph has been successfully completed and the funding for this phase was from the Z'baris themselves.

Phase 2 is currently in progress and this is for the outside structure and walls as you can see on the photos the scaffolding. This phase will also be paid by the parishioners.

Phase 3 is scheduled to start soon after phase 1 and involves inside of the church which is in dire need of renovations. The paint and cement on the walls is just falling apart, the top where the choir is located the floor is giving way.

There is a heavy campaign taking place at all Sunday masses which the second collection is for the renovation funds, there is also a large box outside the entrance of the church which states " Funds for Renovation of the Church"

My conclusions: There is a lot that needs to be done for our church. Much of the collected funds and much more will be required for the massive work that needs to be done inside the church. Two weeks ago, the main structure above the alter which hosts the Chandler gave way. Luckily at the time there was no activity taking place.

Let us all pull together and get this major project completed.

We have raised $44,501.91 as of today. $ 2,392.00 came in from the Family day fund raiser function held on February 20th, in Toronto organized by the Zando Committee. This amount was raised from sale of tickets, raffles and auctioned items. $200.00 came from Bosco Moniz in a bet on the NFL game. Besides donations received in the US and in the UK, additional donations were also received at the function.

The breakdown by Country is as follows:

England $7,071.65 (18 families)

These funds are held in bank accounts in England, Canada and USA. Each Committee is responsible for controlling funds in their country. The list of donors can be seen in the SJ blog (see below). We continue to express out gratitude to all who have made a donation towards the restoration of the church.

Alice Salem – Treasurer of the St. Joseph's Cathedral Renovations Committee in Zanzibar, has confirmed that funds collected so far will be used in Phase III of the restoration process. This final phase is estimated to cost anywhere between USD $ 150,000 to $ 200,000.00. It involves plastering all the interior walls and restoring all the paintings, murals and existing designs seen along the border walls. The process will be embarked on, as soon as Phase II is nearing completion.

Phase I comprised of repairs done on the twin Steeples. Phase II (works still in progress) is comprised of sealing all the leaks and cracks in the ceiling caused by rains. The cost of these two phases arrived to about USD $ 60,000.00.

These bills are being paid through funds raised locally in Zanzibar.

These funds will be held by the respective committees until such time when they require to use them for Phase III-when plans will be formalized, approved and work commences.

1. Phase I (Steeples & Twin Towers)

Works completed and was handed over to us in mid November 2010.Defects seen were rectified and completed by mid December.

All work stopped just before Christmas.

1b. Phase II
(External works) was planned to start in January.

We have received several estimates so far already. And are currently negotiating and considering on using renowned Zanzibar contractors to do the works instead of using the same contractor from Dar es Salaam.

The mainland contractor’s quote appeared to be far much higher. The major reason being materials need to be specially shipped across the channel more particularly for this project.

However, six out of ten members from the committee - namely, Anthony Gomes, Raymond Martins, Tony Madeira, Ignatius Moniz, Richard Baptista and myself, found it to be more feasible in breaking down repairs constituting in Phase II. Instead of using one contract we have decided to split it into either two or three contracts.

(i) One would be, external plastering and resurfacing, etc.

(ii) Two would be, repairs to windows, doors, hinges and other associated wood works.

(iii) Three would be, Repairs to pipes and leakages.

As a result we found out using this option to be much cheaper. We also discovered it would be more manageable to monitor both work-in-progress and completed works. A pair of committee member will partner in monitoring each contractor’s works as they progress.

At this time, an estimate for this Phase is tagged at around US $20,000.

As soon as we receive the final quotation and all confirmations, I will disclose this information to you. Our hope is to manage the expense for Phase II from funds raised locally.

2. Phase III.

(All Internal Work – Resurfacing walls, columns, painting, retouching statues, repairs to benches, pulpit, the sanctuary, and all the major works in restoring the arts and designs on all every ceiling). That’s a million dollar question.

Honestly, at this point in time, we have absolute no idea how we are going to tackle this Phase. So far, with God’s and St. Joseph’s grace together with your support we have moved and progressed.

We will continue in this spirit. One thing for sure, we know that we have to keep funds available. That’s where awareness need to play its part. At this premature stage, we are currently relying on an Italian consultant to make available the expertise for this Phase. There again, I will communicate with you on that as development surfaces.

3. Phase One (Steeples & Twin Towers) The total cost came to around T Shillings 50 million. That’s approximately US $35,000.00. We are still holding 10% retention on it.

Kindly advice the other committee Chairpersons and committee members that Phase I was totally funded by the second collections made during every Sunday Mass. Additional donations came from well wishers, visitors and tourists.

Dear fellow Zanzibaris resident in the U.K.

As you may already be aware, work is progressing on the renovations to the St. Joseph's Cathedral in Zanzibar. The fabric is in a poor state of repairs and much attention is needed to the structure as well as to the interior face of the church. Limited funds have been made available due to fund raising by devoted residents in Zanzibar and a Restoration Committee has been set up to administer and monitor the project. However, much more funding is needed to continue the project to restore this beautiful Church to its proper condition. Fund raising has already started in the US/Canada/Australia and the U.K. and we are grateful indeed to all the donors who have already contributed to the fund. This support is an indication of the love we all have for the church where our faith was nourished and supported.

St. Joseph Church Renovation - Zanzibar - Letter to Rev. Bishop Shao

Dear Rev. Bishop Shao:

Wishing you a belated " Merry Christmas" and a "Happy New Year,2011.

As you know, we have been "fund raising" for the restoration of the St. Joseph Cathedral in Zanzibar. I was asked to head the project worldwide and we started in September, 2010. For 2010 we have raised around $31,000.00. Although I head the project, we established 3 committees; one each in the USA, Canada and England. Claude Fernandes is heading the committee in Canada; Joseph de Lord is heading the committee in England and I am heading the committee in the USA. Funds collected in each country are kept in a bank account in the country where the donations are made.

Our plan is to remit the funds in increments of less than $10,000.00 to the Restoration Committee in Zanzibar through the bank accounts as directed by the Restoration Committee in Zanzibar. $1300.00 have already been remitted directly by 2 donors (one from UK and one from the USA). We will begin this process in January, 2011. Please ask the Restoration Committee in Zanzibar to acknowledge the funds as they are received. We would appreciate it if you will keep us informed on the progress that is being made to restore the church. This will be very helpful as the donors would like to know how the restoration is progressing.

Great Christmas & New Year's Greetings to all with good news from

Anthony Antao.

With the help of a "generous" donation from a faithful Zanzibari from Toronto, Canada, we have passed the $30,000.00 mark.

We have raised/pledged $30,645.26 from folks and friends from Canada, UK,USA, Denmark and Australia. We are very thankful to all those who have given generously to restore the St. Joseph Church in Zanzibar.

It is not how much you give that matters; but that you give in "thanksgiving" for what this Church means to our lives.

2010 is coming to a close in a few weeks and please consider a gift to St. Joseph to help restore the Church- his name sake.

Zando Fundraiser Dance for St. Joseph's Church Zanzibar

Hi All

The date is set for Sunday 20th February, 2011which falls on the long weekend for both Ontario and I believe the States.

The plan is to have a mass at noon followed by five different bitings with tea, coffee and soft drinks. We will have a cash bar too. Late lunch ( 5 dishes ) will be served at 2.30 - 3.00 pm followed by dessert coffee and tea.

Our band in attendance playing for FREE are

"The Cream Crackers"

All this for $25 and for a good cause.

The idea is to raise awareness and thank all those who have donated and are still doing so.

Throughout the event Arnold will present various videos of Zanzibar and the Church and how it is progressing.

We intend to have raffles, games, prizes etc. A committee to be formed together with the current one includes Claude, Steve Padro, Arnold and Bosco.

We strive for the same cause to restore our beloved Church, Tuko Pamoja.

The idea is to raise awareness and thank all those that have donated and are still doing so.

We will be soliciting for prizes, old carvings, Zanzibar and African curios that are collecting dust in peoples basement but might mean a lot to others and cash donations, our GOAL is to get as much as possible.

We thank all those who have contributed/pledged to help restore our beautiful church in Zanzibar where our faith was nourished and supported. This church was the place where we worshipped, were baptized, confirmed, married and celebrated the death of our loved ones. Let us restore the Church for those who still use it as a Beacon of Hope.

The Bishop and the Restoration Committee in Zanzibar are busy supervising the restoration and "fund raising" activities in Zanzibar and Dar-es-Salaam. Phase II and III requires a lot of financial support

The Committee in England started late due to conflicts in vacation plans and other matters. A very dedicated group of members have been assembled. They have met and are busy planning fund raising activities and will soon be raising funds.

St. Joseph Church Renovation - Update # 4

As of November 8, 2010, we have collected/pledged $22,400.00 from Zanzibaris and friends living in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia and Denmark.

We are very grateful for the donations and take this opportunity to thank all the donors for their generosity and kindness. We will sum up the donations at the end of November 30, 2010, and each committee will wire the funds to the Restoration Committee in Zanzibar.

The names of all the donors will be listed on this forum in December/January 2011.Please help us by continuing to donate for the restoration of the St. Joseph Church in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

The members of the Restoration Committee are Fr. BACKGROUND

Restoration Committee in Zanzibar (RC)

This committee was formed in October 2007. Since then, every Sunday the committee has a 2nd collection for the Renovation Fund. They have also received donations from well wishers from within the island, Dar- es-Salaam and from abroad.The restoration work is to be done in three phases.

When the committee started Phase I, they were short of funds, but as the work progressed, donations and the Sunday contributions flowed in as a result the RC managed to raise enough funds to pay off the restoration of both the steeples and the front of the Church (the statures of St. Joseph and the two angels) with a few shillings left.As Phase II is about to be tackled. Quotation received for this phase is approximately $20,000.00. It includes a 10% for contingencies. The RC is now planning on some new fundraising drives both in Zanzibar and Dar-es- Salaam.
Planned in Zanzibar is a fund raising dinner to be held early next year. The Parish Priest (the RC Chairperson) has suggested that the each committee member distribute preaddressed envelopes within the Diocese of Zanzibar, requesting each Catholic's financial assistance for the renovation. In addition, the Parish priest will be visiting homes of the parishers and personally requesting their contributions. The RC is contemplating on reintroducing the sale of tea, and mandazis after Sunday masses. In Dar es Salaam, a fund raising dinner dance is planned for sometime in the first half of next year.The Parish Priest in Zanzibar has informed the RC that the Bishop is also soliciting for additional funds at his level of protocol. This renovation is a long term project so the committee is depending on ex- Zanzibaris living all over the world for help. Every little bit counts and the committee sincerely appreciate every effort each of you make in raising funds.The 3 phases have been described below so we can understand the scope of the
renovation:

Phase I - Steeples & Statues
• Refurbished the two steeples and towers, internal and external.
• Included the decorative works on the statues outside at the front of the Church as seen on the photo to the best craftsmanship available.
• Installed new Decra roof tiles on the steeples.
• Sanded down the iron structures holding the steeples.
• Applied two coats of high quality marine zinc chromate paint ( See pictures
on the website).

Phase I has been completed.

Phase II - External works
• Includes the external decorative works (properly edging damaged and broken corners including filling cracks).
• Wire brushing and power washing the walls to remove fungi.
• Waterproofing previous roof work as an extra protection against leakage.
• Plastering walls in concrete where required.
• Repairing iron hinges on the main doors and windows, replacing window shutters where required.
• Any other external remedial work not yet discovered.
• Due to insufficient funds to complete all of Phase II, the RC may decide to split up Phase II into two stages. It is more important and urgent to complete waterproofing leaking areas before the rains arrive.

Phase III - Internal
• This is the most intricate of all. It is also the most tedious, delicate and expensive task.
• Plastering and repainting all internal walls and the murals.
• Mending of windows and doors.
• Replacing stain glass on broken windows.
• Refurbishing the "Bell" area and repairing the stairway leading to the Steeples.
• Repairing and replacing of some of the benches and kneelers, especially in the Choir area.
• Finding a capable person to repaint all the intricate murals and designs on the wall. This of course, is priceless. God help us here. (See pictures on the Internet)

The ContractorThe same contractor and supervisor has done the renovations for the Dar es Salaam St. Joseph Cathedral and the Bagamoyo Church. The contractor is a registered contractor/builder and has completed many reputable buildings in Tanzania over the past years. The supervisor knows John De Silva, Joseph Noronah, Agnelo Gonsalves and several other Goans, and he works for a reputable company – Webb Uruno. All claims pass through him. He has volunteered his services, but he is reimbursed travel expenses whenever he is asked to come and inspect the work before any payment is made. The works is further checked and inspected by the committee members. Parish priest (Chairperson) is responsible for the project. The RC has a signed contract, with a 10% retention held back for a six month period. A cost sheet for all the accounts is constantly updated by the RC.

Insurance
The Committee pointed out to the contractor that it is entirely his (the contractor's) responsibility to cover costs of any damages. This is because the RC has no insurance coverage and if they pushed for it, the costs would be extra. The extra costs translates into soliciting extra donations. So the RC has excluded this clause in the contract and is continuously praying for God's "insurance" .If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the members of the three

During our holiday in Zanzibar in October 2008, I visited our St. Joseph's Cathedral which certainly brought tears to my eyes. I have just retrieved this photo album I had posted and would like one and all to see the bad state our church was.

With the help and support from all, before long we will be able to smile again and feel proud of St. Joseph's Cathedral after the Renovation Project is complete.

Thanks to Tony Antao and the well organised Zanzibar Committee for spear-heading this project in conjunction with other Global Team members and to those who has contributed so far, plus others who will contribute to bring our Church back to Pride and Joy.

About the Start

Here is the key information you need to know about the Start.

Wave Starts: In order to alleviate congestion at the start, along the course, and at the finish; reduce waiting time prior to the start; and enhance runners' overall race experience, there will be three wave starts. Instead of releasing close to 45,000 runners at the same time, each wave will release approximately 15,000 runners in 30-minute increments.

The Corral System: There will be seven corrals per color within each wave start. Runners will be organized into corrals according to the projected finish times that they provided on their marathon applications.

Start Villages

Runners assemble in their start villages in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, on race morning. The start villages are outdoors and may be damp and cold, so warm, water-resistent clothing is recommended.

Runners will be organized into three start villages/zones -- blue, orange, and green. The base color on your race number indicates your start village assignment.

Only officially registered entrants and guides are allowed in Fort Wadsworth and the start area. You must have your race or guide number and chip visible to enter.

Wheelchair and handcycle athletes will be advised of the location of their staging area.

We have reached the $20,000.00 mark as of to-day with all the contributions/pledges from the supporters in England, Canada, USA, Denmark and Australia.

I never ever dreamed that this would be possible in just a short time (2 months) and we have barely touched the surface of this project. We have touched the hearts and minds of our supporters.

Let us continue to see how high we can go. The bishop and the Renovation Committee in Zanzibar need all the help they can get.

The first phase is about to be completed (front of the church and the two steeples) per Alice Salem(Moniz). I understand the cost of the first phase is $35,000 to $40,000.

The second phase is to complete the external repairs and brushing the external walls. And the 3rd phase is the internal repairs and painting (murals etc, etc).

Now we must get to the rest of the folks who have not contributed and the doubting "Thomas's" to ask them to help support the "fund raising".

Dear Members

Please see latest photographs showing progress on the Steeples.

Here are latest pictures of the progress being made to restore the church. One steeple is done and they are working on the second one. The statures of the angels and St. Joseph have been repaired and restored.
The total cost of the two steeples is between $30,000 to $40,000. The bishop of Zanzibar is active in seeking funds. He has reached out to Europe churches for help.

We will never be able to raise funds to complete the renovation of the church; but we will try to help and leave the rest in God's hands.
So far, we have raised (pledged and donated) $15,000. Our next target is $20,000 and so I am asking you to spread the word and get our friends to donate for this good cause.

The Committee in Zanzibar is very active and is working hard. So please help us. It is for a good cause. I know you can help us.

St . Joseph’s Cathedral Zanzibar, Tanzania Renovations/Fund Raising Project

Dear Friends:

I’m writing to you all on behalf of the St. Joseph’s Cathedral Renovation Committee in Zanzibar, Tanzania to raise awareness and to solicit for funds for the Repairs/Renovation of this church. Some, if not all, must have already heard that the Cathedral is in dire need of major repairs and financial support.

The Cathedral in Zanzibar is the oldest Church in East Africa. Mr M. Beranger, the French designer of the Notre Dame Basilica at Marseilles, France, is the same Architect who designed this Neo-Romanesque style Church. This Church was built by the French Holy Ghost Fathers between 1893 and 1898 with all the material and artifices coming from France. This historical landmark which has stood the test of time for over a century is greatly in need of repairs. It will be a shame to lose it as it is still a place of worship and its where our catholic faith was and, is still nurtured. Looking back, this Church provided us with many blessings to mention a few, baptism, confirmation, fellowship, marriage partners, celebrated the lives of our loved ones at funerals and for many of us, lasting friendships.

The Committee had MD Consultancy Architects, based in Milan Italy to carry out feasibility study on the restoration of the Church and for the repairs have contracted with Bagamoyo Contracting company from the mainland to do the work. This is the same company that did the work on the church in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

The Renovation Committees in Zanzibar, in Canada, the USA and in the UK, are all working together soliciting for funds to help in the restoration of the Cathedral.

Due to leakage and extensive damage to the two steeples as seen in the photos below, we are urgently collecting donations and pledges to have the repairs done before the ‘Masika’ (heavy rains due in March) as untold damage could be done as water is our worst adversary at the moment.

The estimated funds required for the repair of only the steeples right now, stands at an equivalent of $ 40,000.00. This is a huge sum of money for us to come up with and the only choice we have right now is to raise funds by seeking your financial support.

On behalf of St. Joseph’s Church Renovations Committee, Zanzibar, we kindly ask you, to please donate the best you can and as soon as possible. donations and pledges of any amount will be graciously accepted and appreciated. Please donate generously and with all your heart. We have been blessed abundantly, so let us help this great cause by giving the church our best!

The first phase of this fund raising project will end on November 30, 2010 and we will resume again in January to November 2011 with the possibility of having fund raising activities. Nevertheless, donations will be accepted at any time. All funds received by this date will be remitted to the St. Joseph’s Renovations Committee in Zanzibar.

Your contributions can be made in whichever way you choose, for example:

* As a Family together raising the funds (e.g. the Adams family)

St. Joseph Cathedral Renovation Committee in the USA

We have formed a Committee in the USA to solicit funds to help in the restoration project of our beautiful Church in Zanzibar, Tanzania. This is similar to the Canadian Committee structure. The members of the Committee are Rev. Fr. Alwyn Furtado (West Coast), Agnel De Silva (East Coast) and myself (Midwest). Anyone interested in serving on this committee to help this great cause is most welcome.

A checking account in the name of St.Joseph Cathedral Renovations has been opened at the Associated Bank in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Routing number is # 075900575;the account # 2173428612 and the Internal Revenue Service EIN is # 11-3843777. The first phase of this fund raising project will end on November 30,2010. All funds received by this date will be remitted to the Restoration Committee in Zanzibar. We ask all those who grew up in the island and friends to help contribute to this great cause.

There are many ways you can contribute. You can do it in your name; as a family together raising the funds(e.g. the Antao family); in memory of a loved one(father, mother, parents, brother, sister, etc).

Think of this Church that provided us with so many opportunities to grow and meet our needs. Look at all the blessings it provided you. Many of you or your loved ones were baptized and confirmed in this Church. Many of us made lasting friendships and many of you met and married your spouse in this beautiful church. And those who passed away, the Church helped celebrate their lives at the funerals.

Mr. M. Beranger(Frenchman) designed this Neo-Romanesque style Church; similar to the Chuch of Notre Dame de la Garde in Marseilles, France. It is indeed a Landmark.

Please let us move on with the fund raising. We have good internal controls established in this project with people who are taking leading roles (both in Zanzibar, UK, Canada and USA). We cannot please everyone. There will be folks who will have negative things to say. But we cannot please everyone. We are doing this fund raising for a good cause. If you believe in this cause, please help us. But if you have doubts or misgivings, please do not participate. But please think before you put anything on the web site that will hurt the fund raising. If anyone has questions, please ask the committee members who are leading the fund raising in your respective countries. And we will gladly answer your concerns.

Our fund raising project is a way to thank God for the blessings we received in many ways through the church and the school. For many of us, the church was the centre of all our activities. It brought us all together. The church helped us in many ways e.g. faith, baptism, holy communion, confirmation, weddings, funerals, boy scouts, friendships , etc. It gave us the moral and ethical character. Our success to-day is many ways tied to the church, the school and our parents.

Let us try to save this beautiful church which is a historical landmark in Zanzibar . And if we fail, that is alright. For it is better to have tried and failed, then not trying at all. Let us give back something that helped us. After all, our purpose in life is to" serve" and "help" others. And if someone cheats, let God be their judge and not us. And when you give, it is not how much that matters; but that you gave in gratitude.
